Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools Announcements

The Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools Development Team would like to update you on several recent MGET developments. You are receiving this message because you have subscribed to the mget-announce or mget-help email lists. If you do not wish to receive similar messages in the future, please visit the preceding links to remove yourself from the lists.

MGET now supports Python 2.6 and ArcGIS 10

Starting with MGET version 0.8a9, now available for download, MGET supports Python 2.6 and ArcGIS 10. If you have ArcGIS 10, we welcome you to try MGET with it and let us know how it goes. Full disclosure: we have tested the most popular tools but our testing so far has not been exhaustive. Nonetheless we are eager for the MGET community to try it out and should respond quickly to your feedback. Please contact with questions or comments (but please see below regarding my vacation schedule).

MGET journal paper is now available

For an overview of MGET, it’s internal architecture, and a basic habitat modeling example, please see the following paper. If you do not have access to the journal, please contact me and I will provide you with a private copy.

Roberts, J.J., B.D. Best, D.C. Dunn, E.A. Treml, and P.N. Halpin (2010). Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools: An integrated framework for ecological geoprocessing with ArcGIS, Python, R, MATLAB, and C++. Environmental Modelling & Software 25: 1197-1207  doi:10.1016/j.envsoft.2010.03.029.

If you found MGET useful in your research, we would appreciate you citing this paper in resulting publications. These citations help us continue to obtain funding to improve MGET and offer it as free software. Thank you for your support.

New tool for downloading HYCOM 1/25° Gulf of Mexico data

As part of the response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, we received several requests for help obtaining oceanographic data for the region. While existing versions of MGET could already work with many of the traditional remote sensing datasets, there were no streamlined tools for working with HYCOM ocean model output. MGET 0.8a9 now includes tools for downloading 3D and 4D oceanographic variables for the HYCOM + NCODA Gulf of Mexico 1/25° Gulf of Mexico Analysis (GOMl0.04), including water velocity, temperature, salinity, SSH, mixed layer depth, and others.

MGET-help queries not answered between 14-29 August

I am on vacation August 14-29 and will not be able to answer queries sent to the mget-help list during that time. I’ll try to answer any pending queries as soon as I return.

Best regards,

Jason
