Dear MGET users,

The MGET development team would like to make you aware of several upcoming events to be held in California in July:

July 18: Society for Conservation Biology North America Congress, Oakland, California

In this conference presentation, we will review recently developed MGET tools that are applicable to problems in the pelagic zone, such as tools for querying the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) for species observations, for working with the newly-released Chelton et al. (2011) mesoscale eddy database, and for accessing 4-dimensional oceanographic models such as HYCOM and ROMS-CoSiNE. This presentation is part of a symposium titled Geospatial Approaches to Support Pelagic Conservation Planning and Adaptive Management that will feature many other relevant talks. For more information, go to here, select Symposium 38 from the By Session dropdown box, and click Go.

July 19: Monterey Bay Marine GIS User Group Meeting, NOAA Fisheries Lab, Santa Cruz, California

Here, we will give a 30-minute overview of MGET. The meeting is free, open to the public, and intended to foster collaboration among academic, private, state and federal agencies and NGOs in the Monterey Bay marine GIS science community. Registration is required. For more information, go to http://swfsc.noaa.gov/MontereyBayGIS/

July 20: MGET Workshop, CSUMB campus, Seaside, California

At this full-day workshop hosted by the Monterey Bay Marine GIS User Group, we will lead participants in a habitat modeling exercise that will explore some of MGET’s most popular tools. Over the course of the day, we will cover scenarios such as:

·         Efficiently acquiring oceanographic data in GIS-compatible formats, and visualizing it

·         Building statistical models that predict species habitat from environmental covariates

·         Exploring spatial and temporal patterns in fishery effort and catch data

Registration is required. The cost $50 and includes lunch and refreshments. Space is limited so be sure to register soon if you are interested in attending. For more information, go to http://swfsc.noaa.gov/MontereyBayGIS/

July 23-27: ESRI International User Conference, San Diego, California

At least two members of our team, Jason Roberts and Pat Halpin, will attend this conference. At ESRI’s invitation, we will be manning a booth at the ESRI Environmental showcase throughout the days of July 24-26. If you are at the conference, this will be a great time to stop by to say hello, discuss your research, ask MGET questions, etc. We will also be giving 30 minute demonstrations of MGET at the Demo Theater, tentatively scheduled for July 24 and 25 at 2:00 pm (both days). There may be other events as well and the timing is in flux, so check the official agenda when you arrive at the conference.

We look forward to connecting with you at these events. If you plan to attend any of them, don’t hesitate to drop us a line!

Best regards,

Jason Roberts ()
