Subject: | [[mget-announce]] MGET workshop at the 2013 Esri Ocean GIS Forum |
Date: | Tue, 1 Oct 2013 15:23:06 -0400 |
Dear MGET users, On 7 November, I will be giving a half-day workshop on species distribution modeling with MGET at the 2013 Esri Ocean GIS Forum in Redlands, California. I’ll also be giving a 20 minute MGET overview presentation earlier in the conference, probably 6 November. If you’re coming to the conference, I hope to see you at these events. As I understand it, the workshop is free to conference attendees but space is limited and reservation is required. Please see below for details. Esri has told me that computers will be provided so you will not need your own, although this is not mentioned in their description. Important note: part of this workshop will involve accessing data published by NOAA and NASA. It appears that the U.S. Federal Government “shutdown” is affecting availability of some of these data. Some NASA and NOAA data portals have shut down; others have not but have stated that service could eventually be affected by the shutdown. If the government is still shut down at the time of the Esri workshop, the workshop agenda may deviate from the description you see below. Best regards, Jason Roberts () You are receiving this message because you have subscribed to the mget-announce or mget-help email lists. From: [mailto:] Workshop: Species Distribution Modeling with Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools (MGET) Thursday, November 7, 2013 8:00 a.m.–noon Now that you’ve registered for the Esri Ocean GIS Forum, be sure to sign up for the Thursday technical workshop. It is included in the registration fee, but space is limited to the first 30 registrants to sign up. Marine Geospatial Ecology Tools (MGET) is a free, open source geoprocessing toolbox with over 250 tools that are useful in a variety of coastal and marine research and spatial planning problems. Jason Roberts will highlight scenarios during the forum and at the workshop, including one of the most popular scenarios: species distribution modeling. Starting with records of sightings of a marine animal, we will build up a geoprocessing workflow that links the sightings to oceanographic observations made by the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and predict the animal’s distribution across the seascape using remote-sensing imagery. Over the course of the workshop, you will learn many practical geoprocessing techniques, such as how to easily acquire, visualize, and sample oceanograp! hic data and how to explore statistical properties of datasets. Prerequisites: Technical workshop attendees will need to be experienced with ArcMap, geoprocessing, and general GIS (making maps, using ModelBuilder, understanding data types such as features and rasters, understanding feature classes and attributes, and understanding map projections). The technical workshop is only open to registered Esri Ocean GIS Forum attendees. E-mail to reserve your seat today. |
