Dear MGET users,

ArcGIS 10.3 was released last month. I have been tied up with another project and unable to test MGET’s compatibility with it. I do know that MGET’s installer will not yet work with 10.3, so if you have a brand new installation of 10.3, you will not be able to install MGET on it using the installer. Also, I suspect but am not certain that if you have 10.2 with MGET and you upgrade to 10.3, the ArcGIS 10.3 installer will remove the ArcGIS 10.2 copy of Python into which your MGET was installed; while MGET will still appear to be installed, I’m not sure it will work. If you are skilled with Python, you may be able to figure out how to copy over your MGET installation

So, in short, if you need to use MGET, I recommend you do not switch to ArcGIS 10.3 at this time. My other project ends this week; I’ll start on 10.3 compatibility next week. If the 10.2.2 to 10.3 transition is as easy as the 10.2.1 to 10.2.2 transition was, it should only take a few weeks at most.

For the first time, ArcGIS 10.3 includes both the traditional Desktop application and a new application called ArcGIS Pro. At this time, we anticipate that MGET will soon work with ArcGIS 10.3 Desktop but will not work with ArcGIS Pro anytime soon. While we anticipate that ArcGIS Pro is likely to be ESRI’s desktop GIS platform of the future, porting MGET to work with it is a substantial task. ArcGIS Pro uses 64-bit Python 3.x, while ArcGIS Desktop uses 32-bit Python 2.x. Not only do we have to port MGET itself, but we have to ensure all of the underlying code built by others that we leverage is also ported and compatible. We will be studying this problem soon and will let you know when are able undertake the work.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly.

All the best,

Jason Roberts ()
