Benjamin,

Thanks for your interest in MGET.

MGET will run just fine on 64-bit Windows, due to Windows’ ability to run 32-bit programs on the 64-bit operating system. ArcGIS Desktop tightly integrates with Python—it hosts the Python interpreter’s binary code within its own running process. Because of that, you must install the same flavor of Python (32-bit or 64-bit) as your ArcGIS. Because ArcGIS Desktop is currently available only as 32-bit, you can only use 32-bit Python with ArcGIS. Because of that, we are currently only releasing a 32-bit version of MGET.

So, in short, you should have no problems running 32-bit ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 with 32-bit Python 2.7 (that ArcGIS installs automatically) and 32-bit MGET (that you install) on Windows 64-bit. That is what we run on most of our systems.

ESRI has said they will release a 64-bit version of ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 when they release ArcGIS 10.1 SP1. We assume that this 64-bit ArcGIS will install the 64-bit version of Python, rather than the 32-bit, due to the tight integration I mentioned. If that is true, then we will start releasing a 64-bit version of MGET to go along with those.

The reason we mention the 64-bit version on the website is so that Python experts who want to use MGET without ArcGIS do not try to use the 32-bit MGET with their 64-bit version of Python.

Hope this clarifies things!

Best,

Jason

Subject: [mget-help] MGET 64 bit

Hi

I am using ArcGIS 10.1, and would like use the MGET tool on a windows 64bit, However you indicated that this is Waiting for ESRI to release ArcGIS 64-bit

My question is, will the MGET for 32 bit work on windows 64bit

Thanks
