Margaret,
Thanks for mentioning this experience. The basic sequence of events in the
MGET installer is:
1. Install all of MGET files in the proper locations.
2. Start ArcCatalog.
3. Wait for ArcCatalog to be in a responsive state.
4. Add MGET to the ArcToolbox window.
5. Close ArcCatalog.
The most critical step is #1. If that is accomplished, then MGET is capable
of functioning. If you see ArcCatalog come up, then you know that step 2 was
reached and that therefore step 1 succeeded. A failure in step 1 would have
stopped the installer before it reached step 2.
Steps 2-5 are done for convenience, so that you do not have to manually add
MGET to the ArcToolbox window. They are implemented with ArcGIS functions
that were not fully documented by ESRI, at least at the time that the
installer was written, but were figured out by others and myself by trial
and error. The procedure has never been particularly robust, although it has
gotten reasonably reliable since ArcGIS 9.3.1.
If you encounter a failure during that part, you can proceed like this:
1. Close ArcCatalog if it is still running, either in the usual way or in
Task Manager.
2. Allow the MGET installer to complete. If it does not, kill it in Task
Manager as well.
3. Start ArcCatalog yourself.
4. Check that MGET is in the ArcToolbox window, and that it is the right
version number. If it is not, then remove the existing MGET (if it is
there), and add it from C:\Program Files\GeoEco\ArcGISToolbox
It sounds like you did these things, and when you checked ArcCatalog that
you found the correct version in the ArcToolbox window. You should be good
to go.
I'm not sure why ArcCatalog would have hung like that. If the MGET toolbox
was successfully added then it sounds like it hung during the shutdown (step
5). Seems weird. Most of the hanging that I've seen with it happens during
startup, when there is a license server problem or something like that...
Best,
Jason

Subject: [mget-help] installation trouble MGET 0.8a49
Hi,
I just updated my installation to MGET 0.8a49 (and it seems to be working,
however during the installation the process hung at the postinstall script
stage, it started to open ArcCatalog but then nothing further happened. The
only way I could get out of the installation setup was to kill the process
from task manager.
I just wanted to inform you and find out if anyone else has experienced
similar problems. Since I killed the process before it completed I am not
100% sure if the installation has run fully, even though I seem to get
access to the tools I need in Stats section. Any advice appreciated. thanks,
Margaret
