Hi Kristy, Your project sounds interesting. I am familiar with EwE and Ecospace to some extent, and know Villy Christensen through collaborations between our lab and his. I am not aware of an attempt to apply both Ecospace and MGET as part of the same modeling project and would be interested to see that happen. We occasionally give workshops. Our next workshops are in New Zealand in December, one in Dunedin on Dec 14 following the Society for Marine Mammalogy conference, and the following one in Auckland two days later. These workshops will be on cetacean density modeling (i.e., how to make maps that show predicted density of cetaceans, using line transect surveys and remote sensing data as input) but we have given them on other topics as well. We would be happy to come give a workshop in the Gulf area sometime. Several folks from the region have inquired about that recently—I might be able to dig them out of my email. Regarding costs, we have recently been charging travel expenses plus a small fee (usually less than the travel). Our current philosophy is to try to keep it cheap so that cost is not an impediment. Workshop hosts usually distribute the costs so that each attendee pays a fraction, or obtain a grant to cover the cost. We are also happy to collaborate on the development of models. If it turns out to be nontrivial work we usually request some kind of funding and coauthorship on resulting publications. I hope that helps! Best, Jason From: Kristy Lewis [mailto:] Hi, I was wondering if you are planning a workshop on how to implement/use this toolbox? If not, would you be willing to have one/come to an institution and give one? If so, what would be the estimated costs involved? I'm currently writing a grant proposal that applies spatially explicit modeling using another software package (Ecopath with Ecospace). But I would like to also use and apply MGET as a proof of concept and for model validation purposes. Finally, if a workshop is too much, would you be willing to allow researchers to come to you with data in hand to help develop our models? Thanks for any insight you can provide. ~Kristy -- PhD candidate |
