Hello Anna,
Nice to hear from you. MGET has recently been resuscitated after a long period in which we had no resources or availability to move it forward. I am actively working to port it to Python 3 and ArcGIS Pro. The core package has been completed and I am actively testing it now. It will require ArcGIS Pro 3.2.2 or later and Python 3.9 or later (which comes with Arc Pro). It will be compatible with Linux as well. The source code will be hosted on GitHub and MGET will be installable from the Python Package Index using "pip" or similar package managers.
We hope to issue the first release sometime next week. The number of geoprocessing tools in the first release will be quite limited. The larval connectivity tool will not be included. We have done a lot of the work needed for it—e.g. developing a new tool for downloading ocean currents and other data from Copernicus Marine Service, and rewriting MGET's interface to MATLAB so we can run tools written in MATLAB using a modern version of the MATLAB Compiler. But we don't have an urgent need for the connectivity tool ourselves, so we marked it as lower priority.
That said, you are the second person to inquire about it in the past few months. I can see about getting to it sooner rather than later. What is your overall timeframe for your upcoming project with the different reef system?
I should also mention that for users of the connectivity tool, a very important aspect of this Python 3 + ArcGIS Pro rewrite of MGET is that it will run as a 64-bit process now. The connectivity tool requires a LOT of memory, and having to run it as a 32-bit process on Python 2.7 + ArcGIS Desktop really constrained the size and resolution of the connectivity simulation you could run. In moving to 64-bits, this limitation has been removed. You will still be limited by the amount of RAM in your machine and by the length of time you're willing to wait for the simulation to complete. But that will be better than what we had before.
Best,
Jason
Hello Jason,
I hope that you've been doing well! I contacted you about 5 years ago when I was first trying to set up MGET in ArcGIS. Unfortunately I didn't use the output that I created for any papers, but it did allow me to make a beautiful larval connectivity video that wow-ed people in presentations.
I'm now interested in running MGET again. I haven't used ArcMap since then, but it looks like the entire ArcGIS Desktop is migrating to ArcGIS Pro. So before I embark on the MGET journey, I wanted to ask if you know if it still runs on ArcMap and/or if you have plans to write another program in a non-obsolete software?
Thank you again so much for this resource. I'm excited to try and get it to run again - this time for an entirely different reef system!
Many thanks,
Anna Bakker
