Hi Cynthia, The problem here relates to a new security feature that Microsoft introduced into Windows Vista and later versions (e.g. Windows 7). This feature, called User Account Control (UAC), prevents even administrators from doing certain things on their machine unless they authorize it in a special way. This was done presumably to prevent users from accidentally installing unwanted software (spyware, etc.) but it has caused a lot of headaches in “normal” scenarios. When a software installation program is in the form of a .exe file, as with MGET (a.k.a. GeoEco), Windows requires the program to explicitly request that the user be prompted to authorize the installation. In the case of MGET for ArcGIS 10, the installation program was created by Python 2.6, and documentation for that version of Python says that Python will issue that explicit request. Unfortunately, I have come to discover that it does not always work. The result is the error message you are seeing. To work around this, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder that contains the .exe file (e.g. GeoEco-0.8a27.win32-py2.6.exe), right click on it, and select Run As Administrator. Then proceed normally. This “Run As Administrator” command essentially tells Windows “No, really, I AM an administrator and I DO want you to do this.” Let me know if that helps, Jason From: Cynthia Padula [mailto:] Hi, I am trying to download MGET from your http://code.env.duke.edu/projects/mget website, but the program doesn't download because it says I am not signed in as the "administrator" (I double checked and I am signed in as the administrator on my personal computer). I've also installed ArcGIS 10. Help? Thanks. Cynthia Padula Ecology & Evolutionary Biology |
