Hi Mia,
Yes, it is possible there is something with the university's network that is
causing this. The MGET tool uses the same protocol (HTTP) to communicate
with the AVISO server as you use when browsing the internet. Because of
that, you can use your browser to check connectivity to the server. Try
pasting the failed URL into your browser:
http://opendap.aviso.oceanobs.com/thredds/dodsC/dataset-duacs-dt-ref-global-
merged-msla-h
On some browsers (e.g. Firefox) you should see this:
Error {
code = 400;
message = "Unrecognized request";
};
On other browsers you might see something else that includes the text "HTTP
400 Bad Request" or "HTTP Error 400". If you get something that mentions
error number 400, that is good. It means that the browser is able to
communicate with the server. The server is responding with error 400 because
the browser is not making a proper request for data, but the error proves
that at least they can communicate.
If you see some other error message, it means there is a network problem
that is not specific to MGET, and your IT person needs to diagnose that.
Once you are able to get error 400 back when you're using your browser, try
the MGET tool again. If it still fails, then it indicates your browser's
configuration is somehow different than MGET. The most likely case is that
your browser is using a "proxy server" for HTTP traffic. You should ask your
IT person about that, and about what other things he or she can imagine
would affect HTTP connectivity. MGET does not currently support proxy
servers very well, but if that is your situation, I would consider adding
support for it.

Subject: RE: [mget-help] AVISO fail to connect and download
Hi Jason,
Thank you for your help but it is a persistant failure. I have tried with
different SSH products, changing the time-frame, extent etc.
I have now contacted our IT person at our department to come have a look.
I thought that because I am trying to access it from our campus, there might
be some kind of block or setting or something on the University's side that
perevents me from connecting to AVISO's server. Do you think that might be a
possible explanation?
Again, thank you,
Mia
