Hello Jason! Thanks for the quick response. So, I actually need to include my distance along transect in this set of information that gets added to each segment. Our field technicians were great at collecting all of the distance information but not as good at collecting time/date information. Is there anyway to connect this distance information with the date/time columns? I was thinking I would make up the date/time for transects I am missing that information for but still have the distance along transect information.

Thanks!
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Yes, the Start Time Field and End Time Field must have the “DATE” data type. If you cannot select them, you probably have your dates stored as “TEXT” fields. Unfortunately the tool cannot handle dates store as that data type, due to the many possible formats they may take. By only accepting a “DATE” field, the tool makes you do the work of figuring out how to parse the dates from the text, and guarantee that there are no mistakes in their formatting. :-)

It is also popular to store dates as individual integer fields for year, month, day, hour, minute, and second. That would probably be easier for the tool to handle, but I did not give it that capability, mainly to avoid having 12 input parameters rather than just two.

If you tell me a bit more about how your dates are stored I can give some suggestions about how to get them into “DATE” fields.

I suggest you use geodatabase feature classes rather than shapefiles. Shapefiles can only store the year, month, and day, but not hour, minute and second as part of a “DATE” field. You probably want the resolution of hour, minute, and second. So if you have not done so already, put your data into a geodatabase. A personal geodatabase or file geodatabase will work fine; either are ok.

Best,

Jason

Subject: [mget-help] Split lines into Segments

Hello,

I am trying to use the tool Split Lines into Segments. While the tool does split my transects into segments, I cannot fill in the begin time and end time options. I need to add these to each transect so that my presence data can be matched with each segment. Is there a certain format my columns need to be in for the tool to recognize them?

Thanks for the help!

Sarah
